This perl script is flexable enough to check the status of a cisco switch/router/MDS. It was born to check if a cisco MDS port is up or down using SNMP. It is rather easy to use, and even easier to modify to do what is needed.

cisco stauts check script
I had a need to check a cisco MDS switch to see if a port is up or down. I found many scripts to do this, but they did not work correctly.
I decided it would be quicker to write a perl plugin to do this for me. I've created this plugin which initally checks if a port is up or down. But this script is very flexable and can be modified easily to do what you want. Version 1.1 now implements YAML file caching. This speeds up additional checks and saves SNMP load on cisco devices by looking at the cache file first. Cache file is kept in /tmp and there is one file per device.
I do ask any mods to be sent back to myself so I can update this page.
Trying a Cisco switch and getting always this Agent not responding, tried SNMP v1 and v2
