The controller is the brain of Apache Kafka. A big part of what the controller does is to maintain the consistency of the replicas and determine which replica can be used to serve the clients, especially during individual broker failure.
Jun Rao outlines the main data flow in the controller—in particular, when a broker fails, how the controller automatically promotes another replica as the leader to serve the clients, and when a broker is started, how the controller resumes the replication pipeline in the restarted broker.
Jun then describes recent improvements to the controller that allow it to handle certain edge cases correctly and increase its performance, which allows for more partitions in a Kafka cluster.

Live traffic capture and replay in cassandra 4.0Vinay Kumar Chella Capturing live traffic in a typical micro-services setup is one of the industry standard strategies for various needs including testing, canary, and dark launches, but when it comes to databases, capturing and replaying live traffic is quite challenging but equally critical. Cassandra is one of the few databases which supports a live traffic capture and replay feature out of the box starting with 4.0. As part of this talk, Vinay Chella will dive deeper into the query logging framework that is introduced in Cassandra 4.0, and the features built on top of this framework, including full query logging, audit logging, and traffic replay. At end of this talk, you will learn how to use audit logging, live traffic capture and replay features in the upcoming release of Cassandra.

SEACOM uses the CSR1000v instances as dedicated, out-of-path route reflectors to improve scalability. The deployment in VMware ESXi allows high performance routing with low CPU and memory usage. Future plans include evaluating failure scenarios and improving support for higher memory capacities on the virtual routers.

Improving Kafka at-least-once performance at UberYing Zheng At Uber, we are seeing an increasing demand for Kafka at-least-once delivery (asks=all). So far, we are running a dedicated at-least-once Kafka cluster with special settings. With a very low workload, the dedicated at-least-once cluster has been working well for more than a year. When trying to allow at-least-once producing on the regular Kafka clusters, the producing performance was the main concern. We spent some effort on this issue in the recent months, and managed to reduce at-least-once producer latency by about 80% with code changes and configuration tuning. When acks=0, these improvements also help increasing Kafka throughput and reducing Kafka end-to-end latency.

The controller is the brain of Apache Kafka. A big part of what the controller does is to maintain the consistency of the replicas and determine which replica can be used to serve the clients, especially during individual broker failure.
Jun Rao outlines the main data flow in the controller—in particular, when a broker fails, how the controller automatically promotes another replica as the leader to serve the clients, and when a broker is started, how the controller resumes the replication pipeline in the restarted broker.
Jun then describes recent improvements to the controller that allow it to handle certain edge cases correctly and increase its performance, which allows for more partitions in a Kafka cluster.

Cassandra is one of the few databases which supports a live traffic capture and replay feature out of the box starting with 4.0. As part of this talk, Vinay Chella will dive deeper into the query logging framework that is introduced in Cassandra 4.0, and the features built on top of this framework, including full query logging, audit logging, and traffic replay. At end of this talk, you will learn how to use audit logging, live traffic capture and replay features in the upcoming release of Cassandra.

Emancipatory Information Retrieval (Invited Talk at UCC)Bhaskar Mitra Our world today is facing a confluence of several mutually reinforcing crises each of which intersects with concerns of social justice and emancipation. This talk will be a provocation for the role of computer-mediated information access in our emancipatory struggles. Information retrieval (IR) is a field in computing that concerns with the design of information access systems, such as search engines and recommender systems, and has traditionally been informed by other fields such as information science, human-computer interaction, and machine learning. I define emancipatory information retrieval as the study and development of information access methods that challenge various forms of human oppression and situates its activities within broader collective emancipatory praxis. The term "emancipatory" here signifies the moral concerns of universal humanization of all peoples and the elimination of oppression to create the conditions under which we can collectively flourish. In this talk, I will present an early framework of practices, projects, and design provocations for emancipatory IR, and will situate some of my own recent work within this framework. My goal is to propose a new framing that challenges the field of IR research to embrace humanistic values and commit to universal emancipation and social justice. In this process, I believe we must both imagine post-oppressive worlds, and reimagine the role of IR in that world and in the journey that leads us there.
